Like everyone, I'm a bit concerned (I won't say "worried", 'cause worry is a sin!) about what 2009 is going to bring. The great thing is that God's not concerned at all. He knows what's coming down the road for me, my family, my church, my country. And He's got a plan.
My job - your job as a Christ follower - is to discover that plan and follow it. That may mean we all have to make some adjustments in our way of life. You probably already have. I'm always looking, for example, for simple ways to save money.
But it's the mystery ahead that often causes us to fear. We are naturally afraid of the unknown.
With that in mind, I'm starting January's first two Sundays off with a little mini-series I'm calling, "If Only I Had a Crystal Ball". The obvious implication is that I don't have one. So do I panic over what I can't see or know? I hope not.
The first Sunday I'll take us to some promises in the Bible about events God has planned that are getting closer every day, and why those events bring hope to us, even in the darkest of times.
The second Sunday we'll switch over to asking, "So what should we as a church be doing this new year full of unknowns?" As you did last Sunday from Larry Benson, you'll hear a word that might be somewhat new to you: "missional". And I'll talk about the difference between planning for the future and being prepared for it.
Then on January 18 Doug Whitley will be with us to help me launch into a new series on the life of Moses. I've wanted to teach through Moses' life for a long time. You can find out about Doug by visiting this site. But I promise you won't want to miss that Sunday.
Another thing coming in January will be the appearance of a new blog site (taking the place of this one) just for us at NHC to use interactively. I hope it's use will grow and be an encouragement to the church family as we share what God is doing and how He's growing us.
January is also a month when we support our local Crisis Pregnancy Center. You'll see baby bottles at church. Take one home and during January fill it up with change (or bills). Then at the end of the month we'll give it all to the Center to help them save the lives of otherwise unwanted babies and educate young girls and women on how to be good moms. They also share Christ very effectively with them.
So, don't be scarce in January! Lots of great opportunities to learn, grow and serve are ahead.

Christmas Eve and Sunday Flashback
Unbelievably, I rarely touched my computer between Christmas Eve and today. With all the family together like we were for the holidays I had other priorities. But today it's back to work!
First, Christmas Eve's worship gathering was phenomenal. This was our 17th consecutive year for doing this, and every year it grows. Nate did a great job putting it all together, and the MP13 Band and our NHC Worship Choir are both top notch when it comes to leading us in worship. Instead of a the usual Christmas sermon we used a series of short videos we got from BluefishTV that I recommend highly for advent. There were 5 of them that told the story from the Old Testament prophecies through the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem. In between each video clip the Band and choir led us in a Christmas song. The link above will allow you to view them.
One of the results of being a growing church was that we almost ran out of communion elements. Gotta pick up another tray or two! We were set up seating-wise for 185 ("with so many people out of town...") but had about 225 in the service. So, thanks to Mike and his team for scrambling (again) to get more chairs set up. Thanks, too, to the children's ministry and nursery teams for providing child care. The little ones had a birthday party for Jesus. Guests were there from as far away as Australia and Canada.
Sunday was a breather for me. Not having to preach allowed me to relax and enjoy Christmas a little more with so many of our family in town. So, a special thanks to our missionary to Honduras, Larry Benson for taking the lead Sunday and bringing a great message on our "missional" God and what that means. I took lots of notes and he had my brain working overtime.
The 9AM gathering was really sparcely populated! It's the one most of our local congregation attends. But I knew that meant 11:00 would be slammed, which it was. Even though it was after Christmas we still enjoyed some Christmas music, too. Next Sunday we'll put up some round tables in the auditorium again, which is a luxury we can afford in the winter months. We tried it last year and the tables became hugely popular, giving attenders a place to spread out their notes, Bibles and coffee!
It's hard to believe another year has come and gone. For so many reasons 2008 was the best year ever for our church. More was accomplished for ministry and missions and by more people being involved than we've ever experienced. The church continues to grow in health and strength. 2009 will, no doubt, pose some new challenges with the economy, etc. So we will get to see God work even more as we learn to trust in Him.

Sunday Flashback

Christmas joy abounded at church yesterday! People were obviously abuzz with the excitement of the Season. Lots were going around handing out Christmas cards and gifts. I'm munching right now on my bag of macadamia nuts Roxanne gives me every year.
More folks were checking into two new courses set to begin in January - Divorce Care and Focusing on Christian Womanhood. There should be a video promo for the latter next Sunday.
I don't know of a church around with the quality of music God has blessed us with. And what's so great about being able to say that is some of us old timers can remember when this church had no musical talent. Nada. The Christmas carols yesterday were fantastic, including "Gloria (Angels We Have Heard on High)" and "O Holy Night". My dad, who with Mom is visiting for Christmas, said (about Thanisha), "That girl can SING!". And the choir was sooo goood. Their best yet. The MP13 Band also intro'd The David Crowder Band's "O Praise Him". Perfect for Christmas.
(I'm waiting for Crowder's version of "I Saw the Light". I'll dust off my banjo.)
My message title, "Mythbusters: Jolly Old St. Nick", was a bit intriguing for many ("Where's he going with this?"). It should be up on the podcast shortly. Sorry (to any zealots out there), but I didn't attack Santa! What I did was talk about the real St. Nicholas and the role he played in the Council of Nicaea, giving Christianity the Nicene Creed, which stated the orthodox (definition 1a) view of Christ. Before he died and all kinds of myths and legends were spread about him he was a defender of the biblical Christ. Then we turned to John 1 to get the Bible's take on who Jesus is.
After the message I had some great interaction. One attender approached me saying, "For 50 years I've recited the Nicene Creed and never knew what I learned today". A couple more had great questions about the Trinity. Best of all one young lady came up to me after and said, "Thanks for helping me to believe". She had unwrapped God's Gift (John 3:16) to her.
It's so awesome to be in a church where so many grasp the purposes God has for us and live it out. Sunday's are always a celebration. Yesterday I shared some of what the church has been doing in the past few weeks to reach out to our community and world.
Welcome home Emily Benson from her time as a missionary in Honduras!
Welcome home Dale Hamilton from Iraq! (He returns January 3).
Congrats to Jay S. for graduating from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary!
Wednesday night is our Christmas Eve Worship Gathering at 6PM. Please join us!

Rick Warren invited to give Obama's inaugural invocation
Sen. Obama is getting a lot of flack (especially from gay organizations) for asking Rick Warren to say the prayer at the beginning of the inauguration. Warren will get a lot of flack from fundamentalists for being on the platform with Obama. (But flack from fundamentalists isn't necessarily a bad thing, IMO).
There are big differences between the men on issues such as abortion and homosexuality.
What do you think? Is Obama wrong for inviting Warren? Is Warren wrong for accepting the invitation? Or is Obama showing he believes in diversity? Is this an example of what it means for a Christian to be "missional"?

Planning a Family Christmas Worship Time
The tree is up. The gifts are wrapped and ready. Most of all the kids are about to explode with anticipation of Christmas. But that’s true in every home, Christian as well as non-Christian.
So should being a Christian family make a difference? Shouldn’t we be worshipping on Christmas morning? After all, it’s Jesus birthday! And the answer is “Yes!”. For NHC this will be one of those “Acts 2:46” worship events when we worship from “house to house”. The church will be worshipping, just not all together. But how do we do that?
For some of you, having family worship at Christmas is nothing new. But for many of you, it will be your first attempt. Let me give you some suggestions to make your Christmas morning extra special. Many of these ideas are things Gail and I have done at our home through the years.
1. PUT YOUR FOCUS ON CHRIST
How difficult is this in our society? Everything we see and hear on the media tells us that Christmas is about giving and receiving to and from each other. But very little is said anymore about the gift God gave in Jesus.
Before we allowed the kids to tear into their presents we had our worship time. What a better time than this to teach them that life is “not about me”? Isn’t that hard to do? If it’s your first time to try it, yes, it will be. It’s also a great way to teach them patience.
But don’t wait until they get up on Christmas morning to announce it! You’ll have a revolt on your hands, and angry people don’t make good worshippers. Prepare your kids in advance by talking at meal times about how Christmas should be a special time to worship Jesus. But we’re not going to worship at church. Tell them, “This year we’re going to start our Christmas Day with worshiping Jesus right here at home.”
God’s principle of worship always includes sacrifice, and giving God the “first fruits”, not the leftovers. And think about it for a second. Once they open all those toys you’ve lost them for the day! It’s easier to do the worship first than to try to corral them in later.
2. EAT A MEAL TOGETHER
We start with a big family breakfast together around the table. Gail has this recipe for a breakfast casserole that she prepares on Christmas Eve and keeps in the refrigerator overnight. Then early on Christmas morning she pops it in the oven. Thankfully, as the kids get older, Christmas starts a little later!
Now, if you just can’t see that happening in your house, let me give you an alternative. Later that day have a big family meal together and turn your meal time into a worship time. By the way, whether you have your worship time early or later, include in it the opportunity for everyone to serve – do ministry – by helping with the meal and clean up. Don’t let Mom do it all!
Eating together was a big part of the New Testament church’s worship experiences. And since you have everyone around the table at the same time, it’s an excellent place to have your worship time.
3. MAKE IT AGE APPROPRIATE
When I say “worship time” I don’t mean you have to go for an hour or preach a sermon! The younger the children, the more you’ll need to make it brief (10 minutes max for little ones) and use some visual aids. We always have had a manger scene that we used when the kids were very young to tell the Christmas story. We also have done a “Birthday Party for Jesus” and sang Happy Birthday to Him. They understand birthday parties! That helps teach them what the day is really about.
Whatever you do, be creative. If you have a wide age span, try to have something for everyone, and include the older kids in helping the younger.
By the way, your children will likely see plenty of “Christmas” shows on TV this time of year. Why not invest on a good video that tells the real Christmas story and watch it together that afternoon? There are some productions (Hanna-Barbera for example) that have it in a cartoon format.
4. READ THE CHRISTMAS STORY
When they’re very young, find a good Bible story book with pictures. Make the story come alive. As they get older, read it from the Bible. Have the kids read it. Ask questions. Let them ask questions. (You might want to study up on it!) Keep in mind the incarnation (God becoming Man) was a miracle. And miracles can’t be explained by science. You’ll find the Christmas story in Matthew 1 and Luke 2. Don’t forget to explain why Jesus’ birth was necessary for our salvation.
5. SING CHRISTMAS SONGS AND PRAY TOGETHER
For your worship time sing a song or two that honors Christ. Little children all love “Away in a Manger” and “Silent Night”. Older ones love them, too! And if you’re family isn’t necessarily musically inclined, put on a Christmas CD and sing along with those who are.
Encourage everyone to say a prayer and in the prayer include something about Christmas for which they can thank God. With the very young expect prayers of thanks for their toys. But allow your Christmas Story time to lead into the prayer time. If you do a good job of telling the story, they’ll get it.
6. DO A FAMILY CHRISTMAS PROJECT
Christmas is about giving. “God so loved the world that He gave.” If your children are going to learn to be givers and not takers, plan a giving project.
Maybe as a family you can find a way to give to something special. Perhaps you put together a shoebox for operation Christmas Child. Take a moment to pray for the child who is receiving that box. Some families intentionally give up one gift on their list and use that money to give to missions. On Christmas Eve our church will be giving out goodies to the public safety and hospital employees who will be working that night. Visit someone (even a stranger) who is spending Christmas in the hospital. Send a card or package of cookies to a serviceman/woman in Iraq. One year we visited seniors in their homes and sang carols with them.
Most of all let them know the greatest gift they can give Christ is their own lives.
7. DAD: TAKE THE LEAD
Here’s another opportunity to take the God-given role of spiritual head of your family. Don’t leave all this to Mom. Let your family see that this is important to you. Too often in our American culture the men leave the spiritual things to the women. Dad, you be the initiator. Of course, if you’re a single mom, you’re the spiritual head of your home, so you make it happen.
8. INVITE SOMEONE TO JOIN YOU
Look around. Not everyone has a family with whom they can celebrate Christmas. There are singles and older folks who are alone or just the two of them who would love to come over to your house for Christmas. There are still international students here on the beach working. It may be someone at work or a neighbor or someone in your Connection Group. We’re always looking for someone outside our family to invite. Practice biblical hospitality. Share your Christmas with others. It will only make your celebration that much better.
After it’s all said and done, I’d like to hear what you did and how it went. Email me at rick@nagsheadchurch.org.

What would Rick teach in another church?
In case you might be wondering what I might say to another church...
Here's the podcast from Forest Park Baptist Church in Vero Beach, FL.
I should add that the pastor asked me to speak on the purposes of the church. Hmmm. So what I did was take the short devotional I gave at our last F1rst Wednesday and take it farther. So don't be surprised if it sounds somewhat familiar!

Book written to help you fulfill your mission this Christmas

If you enjoyed The Purpose Driven Life, author Rick Warren has come out with a book with the purpose of helping those who have not yet believed in Christ to discover Him during this wonder season.
I haven't read it yet, but knowing Rick, I'm sure he gives the Gospel in a non-threatening and very readable way.
Here's the link for it at Amazon at a 32% discount.

So this is Christmas, and what have you done...?
Allow me to let you in on a family “secret” at our house. You know those sappy Christmas movies that come on every night from Thanksgiving to Christmas on The Hallmark channel? Right. The ones where every peculiar old man is really Santa or somebody’s lonely and they get a boyfriend/girlfriend just in time to kiss under the mistletoe. If Gail’s got the remote – that emitter of familial control – that’s what’s on our TV. Every night.
Now, I confess. I have a few Christmas movies that I look forward to every year. Any version of “A Christmas Carol” (whatever happened to Mr. Magoo?) gets my vote. A great story. And I’m good for at least one viewing of “A Wonderful Life”. My favorite is “The Christmas Story” about Ralphie and his Red Rider BB gun. Lots of laughs in that one. And Tim Allen’s original “Santa Clause”. “Elf” is a laugher, too. And because I’m a big Maureen O’Hara fan, the original “Miracle on 34th Street” (is that the right number?) is a good one in front of the fireplace.
Unless it’s a version of the Bible story of Christ’s birth, mostly every Hollywood holiday flick – even “The Grinch” – carries with it the theme of joy and some kind of “spirit” that should accompany The Season. Isn’t it interesting that even the secular world still has this notion that Christmas (for some reason) should bring out the best in us? Tiny Tim should get medical treatment. Scrooge becomes benevolent. George is rescued by the generosity of friends while Clarence gets his wings. Ralphie gets his Christmas wish.
And while you and I know that’s not really what Christmas is about, it isn’t a bad thing that this time of year people throw a few bucks into the Salvation Army kettle or give toys to kids via the Marines. People do tend to smile a bit more and the kindness quota rises a bit this time of year. And for most, that’s a good enough reason to have this “holiday season”.
But for Christ followers, who not only know the story that started it all, but know the One worshipped by shepherds and angels as their Savior and Friend, this season should be the time of year when we see the door opened wider than any other time of year to exhibit in our lives that He is real.
While it’s still legal (and I say that with my tongue partly in my cheek), let’s be “Merry Christmas” people. “Happy Holidays” somehow just strips away the fact that this is more than a day off from work. Use this season to speak up and tell your story or invite a friend to church or to your group or to a Christmas activity where you know those whose lives have been changed by Christ will be present. Do something radically generous for a stranger. There may never be a better opportunity in a calendar year for Christians to welcome seekers to the manger and the cross that had to follow.
For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us;
And the government will rest on His shoulders;
And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. (Isaiah 9:6)
I wonder if anyone ever really answered John Lennon's question?

For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us;
And the government will rest on His shoulders;
And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. (Isaiah 9:6)
I wonder if anyone ever really answered John Lennon's question?

Created for a Mission
Evangelism is actually carried out intentionally by only 10% of Christians. That means 90% of us are not sharing our faith.
Have you ever shared your faith story and how the Good News of Jesus can bring new life with someone else?
Why is it that the Christian community typically avoids communicating the Gospel?
How can NHC encourage her partners to reach out?
Share your thoughts and comments.

Ministry Fair Sunday!
Did you know we have something like 25 ministry teams at NHC? There literally is something for everyone.
Sunday our ministry teams will be set up for all to check out their purposes and requirements and to plug into a team. The first requirement to be on one of our teams is to belong to the church.
Included in this year's Church Directory (available Sunday!) is a section profiling every existing team.
I'm very excited and hopeful about Sunday's gatherings. We're going to hear from Mike and Tina Hodgson about the role ministry plays in their lives. It's going to be real good.

A testimony about Fellowship
I got this in an email today.
Are you in a group?
For a while now I've really wanted to belong, and be able to help out so much more and serve the Lord with NHC. I don't have family out here to go to church with, though the only family I have here is the church, and my small group within the church family. If it weren't for my small group, and Ramon, I wouldn't be as encouraged as I am. From where I was with no where to go, and no idea what to do, to where I am now is only because of the small group system, and this all proves that it works. I'm so thankful for them, and how much we are able to care for each other, and thats why I look forward to every Tuesday night because of them.
Need fellowship? Need a family? It happens in small groups.

It's all about love

Today's entry in TPDL tells us that we're called by God to be in His family (the church) to love one another.
I wrote the following primarily for my own blog, but realized that it fits with our devotion for today.
A friend in Florida attended a political rally recently and this was one of the pictures she took.
I have some basic, fundamental problems with that sentiment.
1. Jesus (the real Messiah) said the world would know we are His disciples because we love one another.
I have some basic, fundamental problems with that sentiment.
1. Jesus (the real Messiah) said the world would know we are His disciples because we love one another.
2. Unless I divulge the information, how I vote is known only to me and God. So, how will the world identify me as a Christian by my vote? Instead, the world may choose to identify me as a racist or a homophobe or a war-monger if my vote is my “witness”. But love for other believers? That’s a witness that can’t be confused.
3. It assumes that genuine Christians have only one choice in the election. And with that assumption is the implication that if I don’t vote that way, I must not be a Christian. Yet, quoting Jesus again (He is the Founder of the movement, and therefore has the authority to define the terms), Christians are born into God’s family by believing that God sent His one and only Son to be their Savior. That simply means that Christianity is not procured nor is it maintained at the ballot box.
There’s a lady here locally who gets revved up every four years and goes on her own personal email campaign to ensure that everyone else understands the issues and where God stands on them. Somehow I’m on her list, although I’ve blocked her on one of my email accounts. It’s not because I prefer to be ignorant of the issues, however. It’s because I see people placing their hope in men and women, not in the eternal Sovereign God.
Bottom line is this: As one of His children I’ll answer to God for my vote. It is my responsibility to both know the issues and whether or not God has given clarity on His position by studying His Word. I believe He has given clear doctrine on such things as life, mercy, justice and our role as stewards of the planet we call home.
Should my faith influence my vote? Absolutely. How can it not? Is my faith proclaimed to the world by my vote? The world that needs to know the salvation offered by God isn’t going to find it by how I vote. What will attract men and women to Christ is how we love one another.
By all means, vote! And base your choice on principles not party. But the genuineness of the Christian culture will be shown in the days ahead by how we love each other. And my hunch is that the opportunities are going to be increased.

When God Seems Distant - Day 14
Have you ever had that experience when it seemed like you lost your connection with God?
Job simply amazes me every time I'm reminded of his story.
When things aren't going great, can you still worship God?

Developing Your Friendship with God - Day 12
Remember the bumper sticker that said, "If you feel far from God, guess who moved"?
You and I are as close to God as we choose to be.
"Draw close to God and God will draw close to you." (James 4:8a NLT)
What practical choices will you make today in order to grow closer to God?

"Friendship with God is resered for those who reverence Him". (Ps. 25:14a LB)

The Heart of Worship - Day 10
Surrender. Why is that such a tough word?
"We accept our humanity intellectually, but not emotionally."
Surrender you whole being to Him to be used for righteous purposes. (Rom. 6:13b TEV)
How does the battle of surrender show up in your life?

Make God Smile! - Day 9
Worship is giving God pleasure, and He's pleased most when I trust Him.
The Lord is pleased with those who worship Him and trust His love. (Ps. 147:11)
Since God knows what is best, in what areas of my life do I need to trust Him most?

Planned for God's Pleasure - Day 8
Today begins the second week of our 40 Days and this week is all about the purpose of worship.
Of all the five purposes we'll discover, this may be the most "elusive". Our Christian culture has made "worship" harder, not easier to understand by attaching meanings to the word that limit or distort.
This week through Sunday we'll get a clearer understanding of this life transforming purpose.
Verse to remember: The Lord takes pleasure in His people. (Ps. 149:4a TEV)
For thought and discussion: How does the realization that every act of ministry (service to the church) should be an act of worship change your outlook on your particular area of ministry? Do you ever "do your duty" and fail to see it as a way of worshipping God?

The Reason for Everything - Day 7
What a challenging chapter in TPDL. It makes me ask, "Am I living for God's glory?" Either I am, or I'm living for my own glory.
"For everything comes from God alone. Everything lives by his power, and everything is for his glory." (Rom. 11:36 LB)
How does God correct you when you veer off the path of glorifying Him?

Life is a Temporary Assignment - Day 6
Where's your citizenship?
"So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal." (2 Cor. 4:18 NIV)
How should the fact that life on earth is just a temporary assignment change the way I am living right now?

Life is a Test and a Trust - Day 5
In our devotional today Rick Warren writes: "In my own life I have noticed that God tests my faith through problems, tests my hope by how I handle possessions, and tests my love through people."
How have you found this to be true in your own life? Share an example with us.
Verse to remember: Unless you are faithful in small matters, you won't be faithful in large ones. (Lk. 16:10a NLT)

Made to Last Forever - Day 4
Matthew Henry, who in the 19th century wrote one of Christianity's classic commentaries on the Bible, wrote, "It ought to be the business of every day to prepare for our final day."
Today's devotional reminds us that we live now to prepare for eternity.
Point to ponder: There is more to life than just here and now.
Verse to remember: "This world is fading away along with everything it craves. But if you do the will of God, you will life forever." (Jn. 2:17 NLT)
Up for discussion: Since I was made to last forever, what is the one thing I should stop doing and the one thing I should start doing today?
Feel free to jump in the conversation.

What Drives Your Life? Day 3
Today's devotional from The Purpose Driven Life really gets to the heart of the matter about the meaning to our lives.
"Your weren't put on earth to be remembered. You were put here to prepare for eternity." What a wake up call!
Verse to meditate on today: "You, Lord, give perfect peace to those who keep their purpose firm and put their trust in you." (Is. 26:3 TEV)
Think on this and share it with us: What would my family and friends say is the driving force of my life? What do I want it to be?

You are not an accident - Day 2
If you began a prayer journal during 40 Days of Prayer, keep it up! And occasionally go back through it to see how God is answering your prayers and how you are growing in your prayer life. If you didn't begin a journal, now is a great time to start one.
From today's Purpose Driven Life devotional...
Main thought: God created you with a purpose in mind, no matter who you are or how you arrived.
Verse to remember: "I am your Creator. You were in my care even before you were born." (Is. 44:2 CEV)
Discuss this question: Knowing that God uniquely created me, what areas of my personality, background and physcial appearance am I struggling to accept?

Columbia!
You may or may not realize it, but we have a group of regular attenders at NHC who travel each Sunday from Columbia. That's at least a 50 minute drive for them from Tyrell County, across the Alligator River and a couple of Sounds. I find that both amazing and exciting that they would drive so far every Sunday to worship with us.
Just as exciting is the fact that beginning this week NHC has a Connection Group in Columbia doing the 40 Days of Purpose together. Hey, there's even a group in Chesapeake, VA!
No one should be left out of a group. They're located just about everywhere in northern Dare County at varying days and times. So if you haven't connected yet with a 40Days group, let us know and we'll do everything we can to plug you in.
Don't miss what God wants to do in you during these 40 Days!

Are you prepared?

I was a Boy Scout for about two years way back when, advancing to the rank of 2nd Class. The knots always gave me trouble! But every Boy Scout, even if he never makes it to Eagle, understands their motto: "Be prepared".
It's a good motto, especially for Christians who live in a world of the unexpected. Hey, that's all of us, isn't it?
Lately I've been thinking a lot about what I call "crisis christians". (You'll note that I didn't capitalize the word "christian"). These are folks who acknowledge God's reality; even go so far as to go along with Jesus and His claim to divinity. But they coast through life spiritually, never pushing in the clutch and putting their spiritual lives in gear - until a crisis confronts them.
Remember the aftermath of 9-11 and how the following few weeks the churches were filled? There's an example of "crisis christians" on a national scale.
But it doesn't have to be a terrorist attack. It can be a failing marriage; being handed a pink slip; finding out that your 401K is half what it was a year ago; hearing the dreaded "C" word from your doctor.
All these are crises that cause some to think, "I need to get some God in my life". But those people, while well meaning, rush to God (I imagine He says, "And where have you been?") only when trouble brews. As soon as the waves calm, they go back to their pre-crisis brand of christianity. It's in the head, not in the life.
It all goes back to preparation. If life's storms totally catch you off guard and slam you to the mat, guess what? You weren't ready. You weren't prepared.
In my devotions this morning I read this:
If you are spiritually prepared when a crisis comes, you will not have to try to develop instantly the quality of relationship with Christ that can sustain you. If you suddenly have an opportunity to share your faith with an unbeliever, you will be equipped to do so. If you enter a time of worship spiritually prepared, you will not miss an encounter with God. If you are spiritually filled when you meet a person in sorrow, you will have much to offer. If you have established safeguards in your life in advance, you will not give in to temptation.
Christians lose many opportunities to experience God’s activity because they have not devoted enough time to their relationship with God. If you have not yet developed the habit of daily prayer and Bible study, why not begin now, so that you will be equipped for whatever life brings?
40 Days of Prayer was intended to be a time of preparation for us as a church for the 40 Days of Purpose that begin with tonight's Kick off Rally. I hope you've been preparing for whatever God brings our way in the next 6 weeks.

New focus for our blog
Today our blog transitioned from 40 Days of Prayer to 40 Days of Purpose. You can still read and comment on the posts from the first 40 days. And new posts will be added from time to time about what we're learning together during these 40 days.
I hope you'll use the blog to share things God is teaching you and how He is using you to accomplish His purposes in your life.
Don't forget that we kick off tomorrow with a chili cook off and kick off rally. It begins at 5:00.
At the rally you'll be able to pick up your copy of the 40 DOP small group study and purchase a copy of the devotional "The Purpose Driven Life" by Rick Warren that we'll all be using.
See you there!

How Has Prayer Changed You?
OK. You've been praying now for almost 40 days at the same time each day, and then some most likely.
Read the devotion below from Sunday's blackaby.org about how prayer is intended to change us. Then post a comment about how the 40 Days of Prayer has changed you.
Yet now, if You will forgive their sin--but if not, I pray, blot me out of Your book which You have written. (Exodus 32:32)
Prayer is not designed to change God, it is designed to change us. Prayer is not calling God in to bless our activities. Rather, prayer takes us into God’s presence, shows us His will, and prepares us to obey Him.
Moses climbed Mount Sinai and spent forty days communing with God. God showed him the wickedness of the Israelites (Exod. 32:7). Moses had not known their desperate condition, nor had he realized the imminence of God’s judgment upon them until God revealed it to him. As God made Moses aware of all that was at stake, Moses felt the same compassion for the people that God felt. Moses became willing to sacrifice his own life for his obstinate people. In a compelling and selfless prayer of intercession, Moses offered to have his own name blotted out of the book of life if God would spare the people. In Moses’ time with Him, God had formed a mighty intercessor for His people.
God will use your prayer times to soften your heart and change your focus. As you pray for others, the Holy Spirit will work in your heart so that you have the same compassion for them that God does (Rom. 8:26–27). If you do not love people as you should, pray for them. If you are not as active in God’s service as you know He wants you to be, begin praying. You cannot be intimately exposed to God’s heart and remain complacent. The time spent with God will change you and make you more like Christ.

Day 40! - The First 40 are done today.
Each day a new post will allow you to comment on how God is teaching you and how your focus on prayer is making a difference. Feel free to share prayer requests. If they're for another person, please have their permission before posting. And share how God is answering your prayers as well.
Let's use this daily and regularly to encourage one another!
We get a two day break. Then 40 Days of Purpose begin on Monday! This blog will continue under the banner of 40 Days of Purpose. Keep checking in!
Then He said to His disciples, “The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.” - Mt. 9:38

Prayer Update from Robin Brooks
Dear Praying Friends,
I have some good news. God has provided all the funds needed to complete the last stage of my resident visa application! My home church and a few individuals provided all the funds. I’m overwhelmed with the generous provision for this need. I still have not received word about the documents that I sent in June. But the visa agency that is helping me says that is normal and it could be another couple of months yet before I hear something. So please keep praying.
Thanks for all your prayers and encouragement through this long health challenge. The past two weeks, the medical Dr. has had me on complete rest again and that has helped some with the energy and pain levels. I was awaiting more blood test results, which I obtained yesterday. The Dr. said that I am indeed a sick girl that it is not all in my head. (That was a relief to hear, because I was beginning to wonder if I was just imagining how sick I feel.) The good news is that the blood tests don’t show any serious illness or bacterial infection. The disappointing news is that it does show significant levels of inflammation and viral infection. The blood results have not shown any of the long standing viruses such as Mono, Epstein Barr, Glandular Fever or CMV, but it obvious that I have some kind of long standing virus. They are just not sure what kind and therefore don’t have any suggestions of how to treat it or how to proceed from here. The Dr. said that could just be a combination of several normal viruses attacking my system at once. She also said that I have the immune system of an infant (other Dr.’s in the past have used words like deficient or compromised). So she feels that the best course of treatment at this time is to continue on total rest, drink lots of fluids and continue my treatment with the naturopath. She did say to continue on the prescription anti-inflammatory in order to reduce the pleurisy pain.
I do plan to continue my treatments with the naturopath. He too finds a significant level of viruses in my system and through his means of testing he does find CMV. So that is what we will continue to target along with the viruses.
Before this latest set back, I had scheduled starting the Ladies Peacemaker Bible Studies again. The studies will be on Thurs. nights at 6:30-7:30 p.m. and Mondays at 12:45 – 1:45 p.m. from now through the end of Nov. Last night was the first study and we really enjoyed meeting together again. God gave me the strength to teach. I’m very exhausted today though. But I’m planning to be on total rest till Monday and we’ll see how my body holds up with that study. The ladies of my church have offered to do my cleaning and shopping for me so that what little energy I have can be put into teaching these studies. I don’t have much preparation to do as I’ve already done all that these past few months. So although the medical Dr. feels that I should continue on total rest, I do want to try to continue on with these two studies. It is an encouragement to all of us.
Please pray that God will give me and the medical professionals working with me the wisdom to know how to treat this condition and for healing.
Pray also for strength and wisdom in leading these studies. (Thursdays & Mondays through the end of Nov.)
Pray for those handling my visa application and that God will allow it to be granted.
I’m so grateful for all of you who continue to uphold me in prayer. You have been and continue to be a tremendous blessing to me. I continue to pray regularly for you as I know many of you are going through much deeper trials than I am at the moment. May God encourage and strengthen you each day as well.
God Bless,
Robin Brooks

Prayer Update from the Glocks!

Dear praying friends,
I'm starting this off with a trip back in time...
Ten years ago today Sylvie was doing all the work. We went to the maternity hospital in the middle of the night and by noon Juliet was in her arms. We thank God for blessing us with Juliet. She is a source of joy to all of us. We had her birthday meal today at noon and opened her gifts. She'll have party with her friends on Saturday.
Anastasia and Pascal are also doing well. They are both very busy with school work and music lessons. This year Pascal is part of a swim club and swims an hour each week. At the end of the month he'll be seeing the specialist for his scoliosis. Please pray that we will have clear direction from the doctor in order to keep the curvature to a minimum. Both Anastasia and Pascal are in the process of getting braces. We are very thankful for our health insurance!
Sylvie and I are deeply thankful for the spiritual sensitivity they are all showing. They are growing in their faith and are eager participants in the activities of our two churches.
Seasons of change
The big change as many of you will remember is the arrival of Jean-Yves as Pastor of the CEP. (I've attached a photo of Jean Yves and Marie Salomé) Things are going very well and it is a great privilege to work with him. Please pray for him as he seeks to meet the members of the church and get a sense of what God is doing among us.
This Sunday will be a special day for ITeams in France. Thierry Mirone who is working with me to develop ITeams France will be preaching at both the International Church and the CEP. This will be opportunity for folks to hear about Thierry's ministry and to connect the dots between the different expressions of ITeams in France.
I've mentioned from time to time Evangile et Culture (Gospel and Culture), a network that I've helped coordinate for the last 10 years. Recently some things have happened that show my time for leading that work has come to an end. In this ministry I've been responsible to Stéphane Lauzet who leads the French Evangelical Alliance. We've talked about this and he's in agreement. Last weekend I attended a conference organized by Témoins another network in France that's concerned about the same types of issues. It was a great time and it is clear that God is doing something through them. This is one of the areas where I can be a greater service being in a supporting role than taking the lead.
Troubled times
We are all waiting to see what will happen in our very troubled world. May God have mercy on us.
With love in Christ,
Matt
Day 39
Each day a new post will allow you to comment on how God is teaching you and how your focus on prayer is making a difference. Feel free to share prayer requests. If they're for another person, please have their permission before posting. And share how God is answering your prayers as well.
Let's use this daily and regularly to encourage one another!
And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly. And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words. Therefore do not be like them. For your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him. - Mt. 6:5-8

Sometimes you can't pray with knowledge
But that doesn't mean God doesn't know the deal.
Let me explain. About a month ago an old college class mate mentioned that there was an issue he was struggling with. So, I offered to pray. He never did give any details. But it was obviously something to do with God's will and plan for him and the ministry he leads.
Here's a note I got from him this morning:
Thanks for the encouragement. Let me share what God has done here in Middle TN. Finally after a year we have a building that will be done by Jan 08. The Board took steps of faith to make this happen and it did. Because of that obedience by the board God has even blessed us more. As everyone else the last four months have been very slow in fact about 50% less giving than normal. We used all of our reserves and for the 1st time in a long time we could not pay all our staff at the end of last month. When we went to the post office on Monday we got one of the biggest checks we have ever got. The donor shared with us they could invest in Wall Street or they could give to our ministry for eternal investment. We are so blessed and thankful for the faith of our board..
You don't have to know all the details because God does. Just pray.

We're almost to our goal!
For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon Me and go and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.

Tricia's Back in Duke
Tricia was admitted to Duke Hospital today. She's been struggling over the past few days with an upper respiratory ailment. Your prayers are appreciated. Most of us can easily shake something like this off. She can't. And with the chemo she's weaker than normal.
They also hope to do the scans this week to check on the lymphoma and see if the chemo is doing its job.
Check for updates on Nathan's blog.

Turn Around Church Conference today
I'm on the road to the Rocky Mount area - the North Roanoke Baptist Association in Dortches, to be exact - to speak to a conference of pastors about "turn around churches". This is the second one of these I've been invited to this year.
I'll share the NHC story - it's a story that I trust God will use to give hope and encourage pastors of struggling churches to be leaders and trust God for the results. There will be a couple of other pastors speaking as well about their churches' stories, so I hope to learn some great stuff.
While there I plan to stop at the Red and White in Dortches and pick up the secret ingredient for my chili for Saturday night!
Thanks for your prayers as Andy and I travel today.

Praying for 40 Days of Purpose

A main purpose behind these current 40 Days is to pray for the next 40 as our focus shifts from prayer to discovering our God designed purposes together. We'll do that via a wonderful study called 40 Days of Purpose. During that time our church will be studying the same material in small groups, memorizing scripture and all be on the same page as we use a devotional called "The Purpose Driven Life".
Here's my specific prayer for the 40 Days: that God would move each of us forward in our relationship with Him and with one another. Each of us are somewhere in those circles. I'm especially concerned with those who are on the fringes of the family. So I'm praying for forward progress in our lives; moving toward the center.
I hope you'll join me in praying these next few days.

O LORD, hear me as I pray; pay attention to my groaning.
Listen to my cry for help, my King and my God,
for I will never pray to anyone but you.
Listen to my voice in the morning, LORD.
Each morning I bring my requests to you and wait expectantly.

When I shut up heaven and there is no rain, or command the locusts to devour the land, or send pestilence among My people, if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.

Sick Missionaries!!
Hi there!
Stan and Sandy Anonby have the flu. It's pretty bad, with fever, chills, and fatigue. It seems like most of the missionaires and folk in Vianopolis, Brazil, are under the weather. It's been lasting about a week. Thank you for praying for us, as our nerves are frayed.
Please pray for Jillian, our 20-year-old daughter in Victoria, Canada. She's attending university there and she'd like to meet some Christian friends her own age. She's lonely.

Yesterday I challenged us to pray about ways we can be radically generous. I hope we're all doing just that - seeking God's direction in how we can do a God-sized thing right now to meet someone else's need.
Therefore, make it your habit to confess your sins to one another and to pray for one another, so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective. - James 5:16

I can't imagine, but I can pray
In church this morning I asked you to pray for the family of a 13 year old girl named Chelsea. About 3:30 this morning Chelsea, whose family had just arrived yesterday for a week of vacation, went into cardiac arrest and by the time the first responders arrived had slipped into eternity.
I was called by Dare Co. Communications and asked to respond to Outer Banks Hospital. There I met a family in disbelief that such a thing could happen, but with a belief that God is in control. We prayed; quoted Scripture and I watched them grieve over the body of their daughter, sister and cousin.
Not only can you pray for them, but these kinds of emergency calls are tough on the first responders (in this case the Kitty Hawk Fire Dept., Police and Dare Co. EMS) and the emergency room staff. The death of a child hits them hard. And as many times as they have to deal with these kinds of things doesn't make it any easier.

Today is Sunday. Be sure to pray for our worship together to honor Him and for our willingness to open our hearts up to acting upon His Word.
So many give of themselves every Sunday in service to the rest of us. Pray for their ministry today to rise to a higher level than ever before.
Is anyone of you sick? He should call for the elders of the church, and they should pray for him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith£ will save the person who is sick. The Lord will raise him up, and if he has committed any sins, he will be forgiven. - James 5:14-15

Two Updates: Greg, Mike and Dale
I just received a call from Greg Avery in Baytown, TX. Yesterday they fed 35,000 and are providing food for other kitchens that aren't able to get food any other way. He's physically wiped out, living on 3 hours of sleep/day. The good news is that he's headed home tomorrow. Pray for a safe trip for him. He'll be driving the 1400 miles.
Mike is working very hard there as well. He's cooking and training others to do the same. Another 175 volunteers are coming in today. Mike should be flying home Sunday.
Dale Hamilton and his batallion leave for Iraq on Sunday. Nancy emailed this to me:
Would you mind posting a reminder to pray for Dale and all the soldiers? Also please pray for Emily, on the outside she is fine, but on the inside she is having a very hard time with all of this. I know that Sunday will be a very hard day for all of us...it might even be a bit tearful.

Comfortable
At the prayer conference we hosted this past weekend, one of the speakers made the comment that, the vast majority of the time, we modern-day Christians pray for things that will make us (and those we're praying for) comfortable. I've spent the past few days listening to the prayer requests of others, and being more conscious than usual of the things that I spend praying for.
So true.
Yet, it's almost always the uncomfortable that moves us toward the life that God wants for us...a life of radical generosity. If that's true, shouldn't we be spending more time praying for the uncomfortable things of life, knowing that God will always provide what we need to keep us in the middle of His will and purpose for our lives?

Where Does God Fit in the Economic Crisis?
Burnie Staples offers the following insightful reflection on our nation's current financial status and how we should pray.
I have watched with great interest, the ups and downs of the stock market, prices of oil, and vast fluctuations in the US and world economy along with the predictions of what bank will be the next to fall. I also think it’s interesting to watch the politicians, the presidential race, and all that regalia as they point fingers at the opposite party, in an attempt to “fix blame” for the financial mess that the US is in, along with pretty much the rest of the world, excluding most of the OPEC alliance.
The world just doesn’t “get it”. Since recorded history, including the biblical accounts of man, our world runs in cycles. There are good times, There are bad times. They have been around always. In the biblical times, they called them “famines or droughts” instead of recession or depression. But the effect was about the same. Bad times. God always had a plan to see his people through the famine.
Today, our society and culture think we are smart enough to control everything. So when the economy isn’t great, we look for someone to blame. We refuse to acknowledge that we aren’t in control. As I write this, some of the (supposedly) smartest economic people in the world are furiously trying to craft an economic bail out plan that will work to solve the financial issues our country and the world faces right now. God may bring our economy down to it’s knees or He may not, but whatever happens, he is in control.
Not Wall Street.
Not Washington.
Not Warren Buffett.
Not Senators Obama or McCain.
In September 2001, when our nation was reeling from the 9/11 attacks, our churches were filled, and the US congress prayed together, publicly. How soon those pleas to our God fell by the wayside. Maybe God is once again wanting our Nation’s attention and using this, yet another crisis to call out to our nation and even to the world, “I am in control”.
God teach us to rely on you for everything in our lives, including our finances. Teach our leaders to be your servants, first. Give us wisdom as a nation to make choices that will honor you and that are wise.
Proverbs 19:21 says, "Many are the plans in a human heart, but it is the Lord's purpose that prevails."

I thank my God upon every remembrance of you, always in every prayer of mine making request for you all with joy, for your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ - Philippians 1:3-6

Don't forget to get with your neighbors Wednesday night and pray for your neighborhood.
Yes, you will be enriched so that you can give even more generously. And when we take your gifts to those who need them, they will break out in thanksgiving to God. So two good things will happen—the needs of the Christians in Jerusalem will be met, and they will joyfully express their thanksgiving to God. You will be glorifying God through your generous gifts. For your generosity to them will prove that you are obedient to the Good News of Christ. And they will pray for you with deep affection because of the wonderful grace of God shown through you.- 2 Corinthians 9:11-14

If like me, you use The Purpose Driven Life devotional, you know that it isn't sent out on Saturdays and Sundays. So what do you do? At the prayer conference this weekend we were told about a devotional online at blackaby.org. I encourage you to check it out. Today's entry fit perfect with today's sermon. Isn't that a coincidence? Not. [If you've tried the link to blackaby.org before, it is working now.]
Also, click here to find out how to comment on the blog if you're not sure how to do that. We want to hear from you!
He has rescued us from a terrible death, and he will rescue us in the future. We are confident that he will continue to rescue us, since you are also joining to help us when you pray for us. Then many people will thank God for the favor he will show us because many people prayed for us. - 2 Corinthians 1:10-11

The verses below reflect the passion Paul had for the Jewish people to know Christ. Remember that Jesus came to them first.
Dear brothers and sisters, the longing of my heart and my prayer to God is that the Jewish people might be saved. I know what enthusiasm they have for God, but it is misdirected zeal. For they don’t understand God’s way of making people right with himself. Instead, they are clinging to their own way of getting right with God by trying to keep the law. They won’t go along with God’s way. For Christ has accomplished the whole purpose of the law. All who believe in him are made right with God. -Romans 10:1-4

Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day’s journey. And when they had entered, they went up into the upper room where they were staying: Peter, James, John, and Andrew; Philip and Thomas; Bartholomew and Matthew; James the son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot; and Judas the son of James. These all continued with one accord in prayer £and supplication, with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers. - Acts 1:12-14

Greg Avery on Nightline tonight?
Greg called me an hour ago to say he was interviewed by ABC and could be on Nightline tonight from Baytown, TX. Greg is leading a feeding team, delivering 80,000 meals per day to survivors of Ike.
He told me he said, "Hey to Nags Head Church" on camera. But then, there are the editors...
Pray for Greg and all those from many agencies helping the victims of the hurricane. And pray for their witness for Jesus to be clear.

Two making a difference in Ike's wake
The video and pictures tell part of the story of the Tysonesque punch Ike delivered to the Gulf Coast. For many it is total destruction of all their lives built. For others it is major life interruption. For God and His people it is an window of opportunity to act in Jesus' name.
I know two guys who are doing just that.
Greg Avery is one of our own at NHC. He and Cathy volunteer a large part of their time and their income to serving the victims of disasters via the work of NC Baptist Men's Disaster Relief team. Truly Greg and Cathy are living out the vision of Nags Head Church in sending out missionaries. Greg's somewhere down there right now. He has been in Louisiana, but his last communication with me indicated he was likely headed to Texas. Right now he's involved in the provision of feeding thousands of meals every day to those without the ability to fend for themselves.
Glen Sartain is the other guy I know. Four years ago, right after Hurricane Isabel hit us, Glen preached at NHC while I was on a sabbatical. And prior to that he led a Transitioning conference we hosted along with Dan Southerland.
Glen lives in Houston and chose to ride out the storm. I thought he was nuts. He and I were actually chatting via Facebook while Ike was coming down on them. But checking in on Glen yesterday I found him doing two things. First he was clearing debris in his neighborhood. Then later he was cooking for his neighbors. They have no electricity, so my hunch is that Glen either has a generator or a gas grill and was hosting a "post hurricane block party", emptying out his freezer and feeding his neighbors.
Both guys are going to see God use their efforts into the lives of hurting people and produce a harvest because they were willing to do whatever it takes, even in the hardest of times.
Thanks Greg and Glen for your witness and your example to us. God give you safety and bless you in ways you never imagined.
If you want to go to the Gulf and help follow the link above to NC Baptist Men (women can go as well!). Or if you want to give a special offering to support those who are going, make a check out to NHC and indicate it is for the hurrican disaster relief effort and we'll see that it gets into the hands of those who are serving.

Praying for our local governments
Pray for rulers and for all who have authority so that we can have quiet and peaceful lives full of worship and respect for God. 3This is good, and it pleases God our Savior, 4who wants all people to be saved and to know the truth.(1 Timothy 2:2-4)
Wednesday night you're encouraged to gather at your local town hall/county municipal building and pray for our government leaders. Since we can't go to Raleigh or Washington, don't forget to pray for our state and national leadership as well.
With elections less than two months away these are important times to pray for our governmental leadership.
Meet at your town hall's flag pole at 6:30. Come prepared with the names of your commissioners, town managers and mayor. Take the time to look up (if you don't already know them) the names of your state representatives as well as our governor, congressional representatives and senators. Of course you'll want to include our President, VP and the Cabinet, too. Don't forget judges and Supreme Court justices.

Today we finish our second week of 40 Days of Prayer. How has your prayer life been changed in the two weeks? Post a comment and share it with us.
You've probably seen the news from the Texas Gulf Coast after Ike. Please keep them in your prayers. And remember Greg Avery in your prayers, too. He's in Louisiana with NC Baptist Men's Disaster Relief team providing meals after Gustav. Be sure to read Greg's comment on this post.
Did you know that your prayers delight God?
The LORD hates the sacrifice of the wicked, but he delights in the prayers of the upright. -Proverbs 15:8

The LORD hates the sacrifice of the wicked, but he delights in the prayers of the upright. -Proverbs 15:8

A Praise from the Anonbys - our missionaries in Brazil
I've got a praise. Our girl Raquel, who is 15, had an accident a week ago. She is alright now, but she did fall from a tree. She was picking flowers from a tree and the limb snapped and she landed on her back on part of a tree limb. She was at least 12 feet high (or higher). She went by ambulance to the Anapolis hospital (one hour away) and was admitted for 2 nights. No fractures but bruising along your left lumbar area. If she landed on a limb across her spine, there could have been more serious problems. She is wearing a supportive belt which helps with pain. We see the doc next week and see if she will need physio.
She is now out with friends enjoying all the extra attention. She said she will make sure all the boys help her with her books and backpacks etc. She is having fun with this.
Thanks for keeping us in your prayers.

Tomorrow's Sunday!
O LORD, listen to my prayer.
Open your ears to hear my urgent requests.
Answer me because you are faithful and righteous.(Psalm 143:1 GWT)

Hurricane Ike
Before we start complaining about the jump in gas prices or even that gas may be rationed, and the inconvenience that will cause us, let's turn our thoughts to the potential devastation to the Texas coast this storm will bring.
And let's pray for all those who live in this hurricane's path. Remember Jesus' words to "Do unto others...".
Let's also not forget to pray for those already crushed by recent storms, especially in Haiti. The story there is particularly grim. Over 1000 have died in that country from hurricanes this month.
So please today and tomorrow be sure to use your prayer time to remember those affected by these storms.

Meet our newest missionaries: Adam and Melissa Hoffman
Hello Nags Head Church!
Melissa and I are glad to re-introduce ourselves to the community. I attended Nags Head Church back when the little white building was all that was there. I was primarily involved in the high school youth group (as many in the youth group introduced me to Christ.) After graduating high school in 2002, I earned two bachelor degree's (Psychology & Sociology) from the University of North Carolina. My wife Melissa (a native from Hatteras) and I were married in August of 2005. Since then we have been preparing for full-time service with the U.S. Center for World Mission an agency that focuses on mobilization, training, strategy, publications and networking. We are currently at the base of the USCM working with a ministry called INSIGHT.
Since 2005, we knew God was calling us to a role in mobilization, "to see people open their eyes to what God is doing in the world and how they can have a strategic part in reaching those who have no access to the gospel." Over the past year God has been refining this vision and has shown us that the most strategic group of people to influence to be world changers are college students. We have a passion for college mobilization and helping them to gain a vision for the nations. This past spring we moved from Durham NC to Pasadena CA in March to work with INSIGHT.
INSIGHT (INtensive Study of Integrated Global History and Theology) is a one year college program designed to give students an overview of how God has been working throughout history to spread His glory, and gives them a chance to see how they can have a role in completing the task. And students can receive up to 32 hours of transferrable credit to take with them as they finish their degree. We love working with college students and helping them to wrestle with deep worldview & theological issues.
Prayer Requests
*Pray for the 15 students enrolled in the INSIGHT program. Specifically that they would be open to what God is teaching them and they would catch the vision of reaching all peoples with the gospel.
*Pray that God will guide us in our relationships with the students, that we would be able to speak truth into their lives and be good role models for them as World Christians.
*Pray for us that we would be renewed and strengthened in our knowledge and understanding of our God.
*Pray for the expansion of the INSIGHT program to locations across the U.S. Locations attempting to start within the next few years: Detroit, MI; Seattle, WA; Gainesville, FL; Durham, NC.
*Pray for the program that started in Ohio, that the community would catch the vision and the program would flourish. Pray for us as we visit this location at the end of September.

Let my prayer be set before You as incense,
The lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice.
Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth;
Keep watch over the door of my lips.

Pray for Public Safety Personnel today on 9/11

None of us will ever forget where we were 7 years ago today. Nor should we forget the valiant men and women police officers, firefighters and emergency medical personnel who were willing to risk their lives to save others. Many went into the Twin Towers; many did not come out.
Those in our communities who fight fires, rescue the injured and ill and protect us from crime deserve our prayers, not only today, but every day. This is a special day for them as we pause to remember. Pray for their safety.
One way you can remember them regularly is to offer up a prayer whenever you hear a siren or see their flashing lights.
Teach me Your way, O Lord; I will walk in Your truth;
Unite my heart to fear Your name. I will praise You, O Lord my God, with all my heart, And I will glorify Your name forevermore. (Psalm 86:11-12)
